THEN…
The
Horseman’s Exchange was originally started as a home based business by
Barbara Stevens of Wayland, Massachusetts over 30 years ago. Being a
horsewomen, as well as the mother of two young, horse crazy girls,
Barbara grappled with finding ways to make the sport more affordable.
Her thinking led to the idea of opening a consignment tack shop that
would serve value minded equestrian. The basement level of her home was
quickly converted to accommodate the fledgling business, and over the
next 30 years Barbara built a loyal following of equestrians of all ages
and all disciplines. The Horseman’s Exchange was a huge success and
became THE place to shop for quality pre-owned apparel and tack.
Barbara’s expertise in custom fitting saddles was sought after long
before it was offered anywhere. She was known for loading up the van and
taking multiple saddles to her customer’s barn to get the perfect fit
for horse and rider together before selling a saddle….all at no charge
of course. Barbara’s clientele came to depend on her advise and
expertise to get them the best merchandise and the best prices. Her
passion for teaching and helping equestrians went far beyond selling
products. She was always helping with 4-H, Pony Clubs and was often
asked to perform her educational fashion show program called, “The
Horse, the Rider: Let’s put it all Together”. This program was
designed to help riders learn what products and equipment to use and
why…the major focus was always on safety. The shop maintained a presence
in the horse community until 1995 when health issues forced Barbara to
close the shop.

…AND NOW
The tradition continues: The shop reopened again in 2005
at the Wayland location and many of Barbara’s clients found their way
back…some with great tales and funny stories of the days of doing
business with Barbara. In early 2007 the shop moved to Littleton center
to accommodate the growing customer base and give the consignment
merchandise the display space it justly deserved. The store is stocked
with top quality consignments from many sources and it is all inspected
for cleanliness, condition, and safety before being placed on the sales
floor. Here you will find everything you would find in a traditional
tack shop except that it is all pre-owned which means great value and
savings to our
customers, and of course, we tend to our customer’s needs
in the same spirit as Barbara
did:
